THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SPONSORED OUR WALKATHON AND MADE IT SUCH A SUCCESS, ESPECIALLY OUR CORPORATE SPONSORS WHO ARE LISTED HERE.
THE TENTH ANNUAL KBF WALKATHON WAS ON MAY 6TH, 2017 IN PROSPECT PARK, AND IT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!
It was a weekend of rainstorms and we were so lucky that it stopped raining during the time of the Walkathon. Sarah Murphy and Jacqui Simone from Coalition for the Homeless both came, shared a message at the start, and walked with us. Messages were shared by current KBF members, and we were lucky that older KBF members Akash and Harry, who started KBF ten years ago and worked in KBF all these years, spoke and marched with us. As we marched around the loop, we chanted, "WHAT DO WE WANT? HOMES FOR ALL! WHEN DO WE WANT THEM? NOW!" and "HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT!" The Walkathon has raised over $10,000 so far, and so far for this entire year, KBF has raised over $15,000. 100% of the money raised this year supports Coalition for the Homeless.
We prepared for weeks to get it perfect and made a bunch of posters, we designed water bottles and we made are own pins!!! We were lucky enough to have a panel discussion with filmmaker Kirsten Kelly and Executive Director of Coalition for the Homeless, David Giffen.
A huge thank you to Kirsten, David and The Wythe Hotel who donated space for the second year running.
KBF HOSTED OUR OWN SCREENING!!!
A few times this winter KBF members went out to feed the homeless!! Twice we served at a soup kitchen on the lower east side. We met at the home of a KBF member. We made and packed sandwiches and other foods that we could hand out at the soup kitchen. on another freezing day, we packed lunches in our homes and handed them to homeless people on the streets in the Penn Station area.
On June 3, 2017, KBF members held a rally along with Coalition for the Homeless at City Hall and they advocated for the right of every child to have a home. Specifically, they delivered about 1300 postcards signed by NYC kids asking the Mayor to increase subsidized housing for low income families. After the rally our KBF kids were able to meet several representatives of the Mayor's office, including Sarah Sayeed and Nick Gulotta, and hand over the postcards.
KBF KIDS SAW THE MALALA SPEAK AT THE UN
On April 10, 2017, a few members of KBF including Boone Davis, Freya Grant, Grady Belt, Sasha Brod and Jane Polsky visited the United Nations and were able to hear Malala Yusufzai speak in person!!! At one point Freya asked Malala herself a question!!!
