KBF's Project for 2010

Kids for a Better Future has an exciting update - we decided that starting now with Akash V. Mehta's 2009 Birthday Appeal (click here to read about the birthday appeal) we are supporting the homeless in NYC! Its a great oppurtunity to do something local, so we can do lots of hands-on work with the homeless. Click here to read more about our new project!

Wrapping up 2009
Dec 24th 2009

KBF kids raised $12,000 for Sambavna clinic in Bhopal India!
The funds are going to additional healthcare for kids in Bhopal that suffer from the gas leak 25 years ago, and never cleaned up by DOW. Some of the money also built a playgroud for the kids at the clinic. Pictures coming soon.

Protest at Dow!
Dec. 3rd, 2009

We wrap up our work in Bhopal with an awesome protest at Dow's office in Manhattan where we gave Dow our hearts - and Dow did not accept them! Read here for more.

UPDATE:
Several weeks later KBF returned and handed Dow employees the hearts and got a promise from them that they would give them to DOW CEO Andrew Liveris. See what happened

It was a perfect wrap-up of our year's work with the Bhopal survivors. The cause is by no means resolved or ended, which no one seems to realize, twenty-five years after the disaster.

RECENT FUNDRAISING:

On Saturday, May 9th, KBF held our third annual Walkathon in Prospect Park. Proceeds went to survivors of the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster. We had over seventy people come, including two teenage child activists living in Bhopal. See pictures here, and the video here. Stay tuned for updates on how much money we raised as we begin counting all the sponsorships.

On the same day as our walkathon, Children Against Dow-Carbide, a local self-advocacy kids' organization in Bhopal, held their own walk in their city.

Read here for a description of our walk on the blog of the survivor tour.

On Saturday June 6th, 2009, Rebecca Grimsted, Percy Hopper, Asha Norman-Hunt, Gabrielle Vazquez, and Gautama and Akash V. Mehta held a lemonade stand at a block party in Brooklyn. They raised $101.32 and got people to cut out hearts for this year's heart campaign. On Wednesday, June 10th, Harry Lee-Rubin hosted another lemonade stand outside the Brooklyn Promenade, with 10 kids helping out throughout the day. Pictures. They raised another $250.

Rohan Waghray turned 7 on May 9th, 2009, same day as our Walkathon! He held a birthday appeal in Milwaukee and raised $305.

On Sunday May 17th, 2009, we held a fundraiser at the Brooklyn family restaurant The Moxie Spot. There was a presentation about the Bhopal gas tragedy and a violin concert by Brooklynite Michael Braudy. All proceeds went directly to Bhopal. We raised $305 exactly! Pictures.

In March 2009, Kunal Waghray, 9, from Milwaukee, independently raised $210 for KBF for his birthday appeal.

In February 2009, member Ethan Levy, 11, accepted only donations for KBF instead of birthday presents. He raised a total of $800.

All through December 2008, Founder Akash Viswanath Mehta had a birthday appeal for his 11th birthday. He raised $6,000.
